Digitizing wire drawing

As part of the corporate project "Finkernagel Digital", Finkernagel is working on forward-looking topics in various initiatives. The aim of the project is to advance digitization within the company.

Now another initiative could be completed. We asked Mika Adolphs, the initiative leader, how he worked on the topic "Form Metallographic Inspection".

Mr. Adolphs, please describe your initiative briefly. What was the task and what did you do with it?

Mika Adolphs:
Until now, metallographic inspection forms have been filled out by hand in paper form for decades, copies have been filed and the finished inspection reports have been sorted according to customer specifications. The goal was to completely digitise and minimise these work steps. Thanks to the initiative, we now no longer have a paper test report, as all results are entered directly into our system while working on the microscope. This completely eliminates work such as filing the old copies.

Is there anything that has particularly contributed to the success of the initiative?

Mika Adolphs:
Yes, the regular meetings in the Steering Board have contributed a lot to the success of the initiative. By frequently sharing the latest progress and presenting new ideas, the next goals and steps could be clearly defined, which often resulted in a good solution to problems and difficulties.

Do you have more time now that the form is digital?

Mika Adolphs:
We have a significant time saving compared to before. Back then, we needed about two minutes on average for the steps mentioned above. Today, digitalisation eliminates a lot of it, which has allowed us to minimise the working time to less than one minute on average. Given the number of audit reports, this is quite significant.

Do you have any advice for other companies planning something similar?

Mika Adolphs: You should not stick too much to old inspection procedures and not be too rigid about them. Thinking about changes to the processes or developing them completely from scratch can save a lot of work and simplify many things.
